Welcome our new ML, Save the Dates, New Site

Hello NaNoLansing!

Sunday October 27th – NaNoLansing Kick Off
The Avenue Cafe Lansing, MI 1:30 to 4:30 pm.

NEW SITE:

NaNoWriMo is moving to a new site! It’s a very exciting time, but that also means that we all have a lot of questions.

First off – Buddies, nanomails, threads and other such things will not be transferred over. If you wish to keep any of this, please be sure to make a copy for yourself.

Once the new site conversion is completed, it will take over the current nanowrimo.org link and the old site will be placed under http://archive.nanowrimo.org/

This is a WIP, so please realize that things will be implemented as soon as possible, but having patience will be very helpful.

Our regional forum isn’t up and running as of this writing, but as soon as we have our area in place we’ll have some threads set up for you there.

In the meantime you can sign in and explore the new site. It will be run on the Discourse software. This is a change from what we are used to. For one thing, Discourse operates on a trust levels (TL) basis. That means that the more active you are on the forum, the more you will be able to do. This has been designed to prevent spam.

When you sign in, you will be a TL0. If you want to reach your full posting potential, you have to level up to TL1. This is very easy to do. Just open up about 5 topics, read 30 posts and read for 10 minutes, give or take. Do this and you’ll be TL1 and ready to start interacting with the rest of the community. The other limitation you will want to know if you are one of those uber posters, is that you will be limited to 100 posts within the first 24 hours after your first post. Again, this is a spam prevention measure.

If you want more info on trust levels, you can find that here. Also, if you would like more information on Discourse itself, you can find it at this url.

As I said before, this is a very exciting time for NaNoWriMo. I hope I’ve answered a few of your questions and hope to see you at our events!

Take care everyone!
Annette aka Contemplative_Cat, one of your NaNoLansing Municipal Liaisons

Wrapping Up a Great NaNo Season

Wrapping Up a Great NaNo Season

Hello NaNoLansing!

We are officially done with our 2018 NaNo Season and it’s been a great one! Whether you finished the year with a stupendous 50K+ or less, you wrote and that’s what counts! You’re all winner’s in my book!

Every year I say I will continue the writing habit and every year I succumb to only writing during NaNo related events. At the TGIO party we talked about getting something going in the new year. Keep your eyes on this thread and our FB page. I’ll also send out NaNoMails with information too from time to time.

It’s good to know that I was able to survive managing things on my own this year, but I couldn’t have done it without all of you!

Sending Out A Heartfelt Thank To…

Thank you, LyraN88 for all your help with prepping, planning and posters. (Thanks to both you and your sister for your help with setting up and taking down so many of the events.) Thanks also to Tuscon McDude for his help with setting up and taking down.

Thanks again to our NaNo Prep Workshop presenters – Richelle McFate, Colleen Gleason, Lev Raphael and Elizabeth Heiter.

Thank you to Sihaya48 for all of your invaluable help at our Kick Off!

Thanks to all of you who helped with write ins so our Wrimos had more options – Edwina Murphy and the Library of Michigan, Eric Stanton and the Okemos Public Library, AlexandriaSure and Hilary-Noelle!

Thanks to Colleen at The Avenue Cafe for our kick off location, Old Chicago for the use of your beautiful group room for our write ins and Okemos Public Library for our TGIO space!

Thanks to Riverwoman, SkylarkLanding and Sihaya48 for your help getting our goodie bags made.

Thanks to SkylarkLanding for her wonderful Winner prizes!

Thanks to JFolja for donating the wonderful 3D Printed NaNoRhino and to LizVogel for gifting it to me when she won it.

Thanks to Elisabeth Anderson & AlexandriaSure for donating prizes.

Thanks to everyone who donated to NaNoWriMo, everyone who brought candy for the cauldrons, and anyone else my NaNo coma brain might have forgotten to mention.

But especially, thank you to each and every one of you! I say this frequently, but I really can’t say it enough. You are the best group of people an ML could ever hope to have. I feel so very grateful to each and every one of you! <3

NaNo 2018 Statistics

Many of you know how I like stats and so I’ve compiled the NaNoLansing 2018 stats for you.

  • 208 people wrote at least 1 word
  • 72 people wrote over 50K words and
  • 71 people validated their novels and officially won!

We’re in the Final Stretch!

We’re in the Final Stretch!

Hello everyone,

We are down to the last couple of days of NaNoWriMo. Epic things have happened in the last few days of NaNoWriMo. We’ve had people write over 20K words in the last two days to do a stunning last minute dive into their win and go down in the halls of fame of epic wrimos and become one of Cat’s NaNoLansing heroes. That’s so amazing to see!

Or perhaps you’ve already hit the 50K mark. Yay You! Well Done! Whoo Hoo!!!
Be sure to validate your novel because you won’t officially win until you get that purple bar. Information on how to validate your novel is here. We have 27 official winners right now and 2 who still need to validate and it looks like a lot more are coming up to the finish line!  Whee…….

If you have hit the 50K, please head over to our winner’s hall of fame and come celebrate with us!

Perhaps you had a different goal and hit that. Yay! Or maybe you only wrote a bit. That’s still great because it’s more than you would have written, right? So it’s a win in that respect.

But there are still words to be written and to help you in that quest (or support others in their quest) here are our last write ins.

Pre-Thanksgiving Check In

Pre-Thanksgiving Check In

Hello NaNoLansing,

It’s the day before Thanksgiving and Week 4. Maybe you’ll be traveling out of town or maybe you’ll be cooking your turkey, but there is still time to write. If you aren’t driving, take your laptop with you and write during the trip. If you are driving, perhaps use speech to text on your phone. Or write while the turkey is cooking. You can make time for more writing. Even a 15 minute word sprint on Chat NaNo can bring your word count up. You can do this! Even if you feel way behind, you still have a week! Amazing things can happen in a week’s time!

If you are past the 50K mark – Congratulations! Awesome job! Be sure that you validate your novel though because you don’t automatically win NaNoWriMo without verifying that you wrote those words. Don’t be a tragic forever green statistic (and make your ML’s heart break.) Be sure to validate before midnight on the 30th or sooner. If for no other reason, then to make your ML happy. 😉
You can still update your word count after you get your purple bar so don’t worry about that. For information on how to validate, click here. And please stop by and celebrate with us in the 2018 Winner’s Hall of Fame! Also, there is a special little treasure waiting for you the next time your ML sees you at an event.

Speaking of events – please mark your calendars for our TGIO party, which will be from 1:30 to 5:30 pm on Saturday December 1st at the Okemos Public Library!
We’ll have raffle prizes (Lovely NaNoLansing Tote Bag and an amazing Glow in the Dark 3D printed NaNoRhino compliments of JFolja), a white elephant gift exchange, potluck and loads of fun. Please rsvp here.

But we’re not done yet. To help you with your word count goals and give you some more time to hang out with your fellow wrimos and get more checks on your achievement cards for more raffle tickets toward those awesome TGIO prizes, we have these write ins planned for you.

It’s Week 3!

It’s Week 3!

Hello NaNoLansing Wrimos!

It’s almost the mid-point and week 3. First off, congratulations yourself for making it here. You were able to move past hell week and it gets better from here. It really does. Plus, whether you are speeding down the word count river and zipping ahead of the crowd or trailing way behind – you’ve written words and you can be proud of yourself. And if you haven’t started yet, there’s still time. You can start writing and sail on through the rest of the month on the tide of creativity.

Week 3 can be the time for lots of distractions and perhaps a little more of the inner critic chaos as it tries to break free. Don’t worry. There are strategies that you can use to help with this.

1. Find some kind of reward to use. Is there a new book you want? Perhaps a new pen? Maybe a night out at that new restaurant you want to try. Tell yourself that if you reach x goal, you can get that or do that.

2. Be sure to take care of yourself. Remember those little balls from the goodie bags? Use those to massage those tired arms and wrists. Stretch those hands and get up and move once in a while. And don’t forget about sleep. That will help too.

3. End your writing time with something else to say. It will help motivate you to jump back in again the next day.

4. Do word sprints. Set your timer for 15 or 20 minutes and then write away – or jump on Chat NaNo and have Timmy make a word war for you. Then take a break for a few and repeat. It’s a great way to keep your creative juices flowing.

5. Do something good for a fellow wrimo and nominate them (or yourself) for a halo. And/or donate to the traveling TARDIS at a write in!

6. Share a Pep Talk with Your Fellow Wrimos in our Need a Pep, Leave a Pep Talk Thread.

7. Share something funny you wrote or some strange twist your characters took you on in our NaNoLansingisms Thread.

8. Back Up Your Novel on Back Up Your Novel Day – Saturday November 17th (And everyday.)

9. Join us online or in person for write ins. There’s nothing like the tsunami of creativity that happens when you surround yourself with other writers who are ferociously typing away.

And for those of you who are following Wrimoverse (or who just want more pep), here is this week’s Wrimoverse pep talk.

Happy writing, everyone!
Annette aka Contemplative Cat, your NaNoLansing ML

It’s almost Week 2!

It’s almost Week 2!

Soon it will be our 2nd week.

This is the week of many names – hell week, inner critic week, the week of doubts and loss of enthusiasm. Whether your words have been flying with ease or you’ve been doling them out at a snails pace, don’t worry because even if you feel stuck at sea, wondering why you ever started this journey, know that this is a normal and typical response and it will pass. Believe me. It will!

Right now though – Give yourself credit. You decided to write a novel and you’ve spent a week at it already. You’re farther ahead than most people. Yay you! Take a moment and let that settle in.

Feels good, huh?

Hang onto that feeling and know that we’ve all experienced the meh waterway to some degree or another and we can navigate through that. Trust that you can too and just keep writing! Seriously. Even just 100 words a day – one paragraph or even 1 line. Don’t give up!

One word after another builds sentences and sentences build paragraphs and paragraphs create pages. With one word at a time, you’ll get through this week and be well on your way to 50,000 words.

Perhaps you’d like a (small) break and have some fun. Check out our NaNoLansingisms thread and get a chuckle or share a chuckle. Or ask for some or share some of your strategies for helping yourself through the rough patches in our Help Desk Thread. Or perhaps you are a bit competitive and are encouraged by seeing where you stand against your fellow wrimos – if that’s the case come post something on our NaNo Faces thread to be added to the graph. Or participate in the Wrimoverse Word Crawl – all are welcome whether you are doing Wrimoverse or not.

And to help keep you motivated and moving forward, here are our write ins for this week!

NaNo Starts Soon!!!!

NaNo Starts Soon!!!!

Hey everyone,

The clock is ticking and soon it will be time to set sail for NaNoWriMo!  Whee…..

In just a few hours we will be hoisting our anchors and letting our imaginations start to flow. Perhaps you’ve plotted out your course and know exactly where you’re headed, or maybe you will be letting the winds take you where they will. Either way, this month is going to be great fun.

We’re going to be afloat in a sea of words – 50000 of them if you are going for the typical goal. That may sound like a lot, but it’s really only 1667 words a day and we’ve had people who wrote that in just two word sprints. But if your words are pouring out, don’t stop with just that. Keep writing and build a nice reservoir of words for later when you might be too busy to write or you just need a break.

We’ll have write ins to help keep you buoyed up throughout the month and these are not only fun, but we also get a lot of words written. How about that for a winning proposition?

What can you do right now? Declare your novel. Don’t wait because you won’t be able to update your word counts until then. Also, Come Introduce Yourself here. Join in the fun of tracking your word counts with others and post something in our FACES thread. Let us know what you can bring for the potluck at our Saturday all day Write In – and plan on doubling your word count that day, because it’s double up donation day (and word count day).

Write ins for this week are:

Tonight Wed. 10-31 to Nov 1st, 11:30 pm to 1 or 2 am
Midnight Write In with Hilary-Noelle

And for twice your pleasure – Here is your Wrimoverse Communiqué!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Hello Cadets!

Today we are counting down till the launch into the waters off the Wrimoverse and your novel.  The entire Wrimoverse academy staff is counting down the seconds so we can tell you: “Welcome to another great NaNoWriMo!”

For those returning, there’s a whole new crazy adventure waiting, and we commend you for daring to dive into the depths of novel-writing yet again. For all the new writers, you’re going to love it. It’s whimsical and fun and true, sometimes you may feel like you’re drowning, but as Dory said in “Finding Nemo” Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, and eventually you’ll get there! And the best thing? You’ll meet lots of like-minded and nutty people along the way.

If you aren’t sure how to go about this, just take it easy. Let yourself be carried on the waves of your creative mind and write where it takes you.

If it takes you in the direction of our deep-sea adventure, there will be plenty of things you can join in on, badges to claim, goals to achieve and words to be written.  But before all that, we will have one kicking party. On Thursday, November 1st join us in the chatroom for our kickoff event that will span all the Wrimoverse time zones.

The first weekend will be coming up swiftly, and this is your best chance to get ahead a little while you can, while the excitement of those first few days is still strong.  Use the opportunity and write like a fish in the water. No matter how you write, write! And go get those words! All of them!

In Wrimoverse news, the story has been updated again! Check the website to follow along on our adventures. (It updates Wednesdays and Sundays.) If you haven’t yet taken it, the S.T.A.R.S. is still accepting student applications. If you’ve already filled out the form, students are sorted and added to their respective ships on Tuesdays.

If you need some word wars or just some company, the #Wrimoverse chat is open 24/7. Every week we have a Wrimoverse Wednesday Write-In, so be sure to come check it out and on November 1st we have the Launch Off party, the Wrimoverse KO where together we’ll dive into the month of November.

That is all for now, Cadets.
Plot well and we’ll see you next week!

Contemplative Cat

Just One Week(ish) to Go!

Just One Week(ish) to Go!

Greetings NaNoLansing Wrimos,

It’s hard to believe that we only have a week before we set sail for this crazy and exciting adventure called NaNoWriMo! Don’t know about you, but there’s a lot more preparation I’d like to complete before the 1st.

Luckily for all of us, we have 2 more prep workshops available – one in person and one online. (Details below under activities.)

If you’re like me and love to track stats and see where everyone is in their writing journey, NewMexicoKid has once again provided the NaNo Faces graph for us. If you want to participate and see where you stand amongst your fellow NaNoLansingites, please post over at our NaNo Faces Thread.

Also, if you haven’t done so, come say hi to us in the introduction thread, post questions or ask for help in this thread, share your NaNo Prep Resources here, let us know how you’re preparing for NaNo here and sign up for or refamiliarize yourself with ChatNaNo (our online chat room) here.

Additionally – Friday is your last day to RSVP for our kick off. (Your ML needs time to make all of those goodie bags and assure she has enough goodies to go around.) If you haven’t done so, RSVP here. More info on our fun kick off is here.

Onto our activities:

Thursday 10-25
Tomorrow’s NaNo Prep workshop will be given by Elizabeth Heiter. She will be providing timely information about how to write efficiently and effectively, which will definitely help as we start NaNo. Elizabeth is a tremendous speaker and a prolific writer who has published numerous books in the last 4 years. She definitely knows how to use her time well and you won’t want to miss this workshop!
Time: 7-9 pm (We can stay longer to prep more if we wish)
Place: Old Chicago 1938 Grand River Avenue, Okemos, MI 48864 –  Map

Friday 10-26
Come join us in a Wrimoverse online writing workshop where you will get to know your characters better, practice writing titles, and give your fingers and creativity a workout with people from all over.
Time:
2-4 pm and 7:30 – 9:30 pm. (Two options. Same workshop.)
Place:
ChatNaNo #wrimoverse channel (Be sure to sign up in advance so you will have easy access without waiting.)

Sunday 10-28
Our awesome kick off party!
Time: 2-5 pm

That’s enough for now on the regional end. Onto Wrimoverse news. (And if you don’t know what wrimoverse is, check out this thread. There’s still time to join the fun!)

Greetings cadets!

The distress call is decoded and preparations are underway.  Can you believe that week 3 of the SSA has now bubbled up from the deep?  It doesn’t seem quite possible, but there it is!

Those who’ve attended last weeks extra training session in the chatnano pool have been able to gather some extra points for their ships. It’s a very close call; however, a fast wave can change that all.  That is why you should quickly log your points to help your shipmates out and get ahead before we set sail for November!

You can check your ships bearing on the ship cup page.

Have any of your fellow cadets or cadets from other ships been super helpful to you?  Did someone save you from drowning in prep, explain how to stay afloat really well or give you some pretty seashells?  Then give them a Kudos! Just fill out the form and it will appear on the Shout Out page.  You can do this at any time to point out an awesome shipmate or fellow cadet.

You can still sign up for the adventure by taking the S.T.A.R.S.  More info on this can be found on the message boards in each living quarter or on the Wrimoverse website.

Those who would like to stretch their muscles and do some laps in the chatnano writing pool can join us on Oct 26, for a pre-academy training session. (inflatable scribbling aids not included)
10/26/2018  2 pm and 7.30PM at www.chatnano.net #wrimoverse

A week later there will be THE Launch Party!

Wednesday, October 30 from 10am- 1am, do join us in the chatroom for our kick off event that spans all the wrimoverse timezones.

That is all for now, Cadets.

Plot well!

Contemplative Cat aka Annette

I see that we have several NaNoLansing people who are participating in Wrimoverse this year. Glad to see that. There will be an online prep workshop this Friday 10-19 at 7:30 pm. www.chatnano.net #wrimoverse (Feel free to come to this even if you aren’t participating in Wrimoverse.)
If you haven’t registered to use our chatnano chat room or just need a refresher, information can be found here.

And now onto Wrimoverse news:

Greetings, Wrimos!

While the decoding of the message is on its way, and Wrimoverse has been afloat for its second week already!

If you haven’t done so already, please search the ship crew lists here in order to find what ship you’ve been placed on. Ctrl + F (pc) or command + F (mac) is the keyboard shortcut for searching. You will have to look through each ship list separately.

If you haven’t signed up, you can still do so (new and returning) by completing the S.T.A.R.S. form. If you have forgotten which ship you were on last year, you will have to go through the sorting process again.

As November is surfing closer, feel free to start logging your points for this year’s Ship Cup. You can earn badges!

Our Captains’ Log has been updated with the newest part of our adventure, so be sure to check in to keep up to date with our antics. Additional information about the Wrimoverse can be found on the Wrimoverse Website, as well as on our local forum! If you haven’t stopped by the Cadet Lounge yet, please feel welcome to do so.

Online NaNo Prep Session:
We are hosting a pre-NaNo training session on Oct 19.  Those in need of stretching, can join in and do some laps in the chatnano writing pool.  (inflatable scribbling aids not included) at 7.30PM www.chatnano.net #wrimoverse

Happy prepping, from your ML,

Workshop 10-4, Other Events and Wrimoverse

Workshop 10-4, Other Events and Wrimoverse

Hello NaNoLansing Wrimos!

We have a wonderful pre-NaNo workshop scheduled for tomorrow!

Richelle Renae McFate, one of our own NaNoLansing authors, will be helping us learn how to be organized in our writing. She’s published several books, is an amazing editor and has inspired me with her organizational skills for several years. She’ll have information that will help all of us.

How to be an Organized Writer
7 – 9 pm
Old Chicago 1938 Grand River Avenue, Okemos, MI 48864 –  Map

We also have more workshops scheduled there every Thursday in October.
On the 11th, Colleen Gleason will be helping us plot using the Hero’s Journey.
On the 18th, Lev Raphael will help us make important and memorable settings and
on the 25th Elizabeth Heiter will teach us how to write efficiently and effectively.
For more information see this thread.

Our kick off will be October 28th from 2 to 5 pm. You can find more information here. Please remember to rsvp by the 26th because our goodie bags this year will contain a special something that I’m sure you will love.

We have a lot of write ins scheduled and you can find them in this thread.
While you’re over at the forum, come say hi and introduce yourself and also declare your novel (even if the title is TBD like mine.)

This year we will have another avenue for motivation and fun. In addition to our in-person events, we have been invited to take part in a multi-region adventure online called Wrimoverse! This is an optional event, but a very fun way to meet people from around the world, make new friends and come up with crazy ideas together.

Another way to think about Wrimoverse could be in terms of a Potterverse experience done NaNo style with the ability to be sorted into one of 4 different ships and an adventure that we all participate in together, while ships compete against each other to win individual badges and ultimately the Ship Cup.

So without further ado, here is your formal invitation.

Ahoy Cadets!

We are pleased to inform you that you are invited to join us at the Space Scribblers Academy, where you can begin or continue your state of the art education in the ways of scribbling.

It’s promising to be another year of exciting, novel writing adventures! Now is the time to gather up a plot bunny or two, dust off your keyboards or notebooks (or both, we don’t judge), and get ready for November!

Enclosed are a transporter token that will ship you to the Academy Base, a list of the necessary tools and equipment for success during your studies, and an overview of your training schedule.

Upon arrival, new students will be sorted onto one of our four ships: the MLS D. Shovel, the MLS H. Viking, the MLS P. Bunny, and the MLS P. Ninja, by taking the S.T.A.R.S.,  the Standard Team Analysis for Recruitment Sorting. If you have been at campus before, you need to report to the ship you were on last year, by taking the same test with mentions of the ship you were on last year. If you can’t remember what ship you are part off, you need to take the test from start to end. Please remember that while at the Academy, these ships will be your home, and their crew will be your friends and (sup)port.

Each ship has its own personality and accompanying quirks and preferences, and is captained by multiple Academy leaders, each with their own unique skills, who are eagerly waiting to welcome you to their ranks. Together, we will all dive into the depths of wrimoverse.

Basic (optional) training will begin in October. Mandatory practical training will commence on November 1st. We await your arrival at the Academy Base.

Yours sincerely,
Contemplative Cat, ensign MLS P. Bunny
Your Space Scribblers Academy Representative
