Week 2 Battle Plan

Week 2 Battle Plan

Hello NaNoLansing Superwriters,

This is Cat from Mission Control with an important announcement for you.

Together, our words have crushed Max Perfect and sent him off for the rest of the month! Well done! We couldn’t have done this without our combined efforts. Things are definitely looking up in our battle for Word Domination!

But Week 2 brings with it one of the worst villains of the Illiterasee – Lord Bloque! He has even made his way into Mission Control and I’ve had to battle his forces of evil. Lord Bloque is a tricky fellow. Also known as the Blank Lord of Oblivion and Quantum Unending Existentialism, he sweeps in to make us feel like we couldn’t write a novel if our life depended upon it. The Illiterasee know that we are the most vulnerable to Bloque’s influence during the week 2 slump.

How does he affect us? Let me tell you my story. This morning I looked at my manuscript and wanted to chuck it out the window. I hated my characters, couldn’t find where the story should go and stared at my computer screen for a half hour without typing. Even a word war set up by our friendly bot, Timmy in our regional chatroom couldn’t shake the feeling like it was hopeless. I couldn’t write. Why was I bothering? What was it all for anyway? But then I realized it was Lord Bloque coming to thwart my efforts and I wasn’t going to let him win!

Don’t you let him win either. If you can get through the week 2 blahs, it will get better. This is only the Illiterasee trying to win in the war for Word domination. Together we can kill off this evil villain too. But we have to keep writing!

So what can we do to beat Lord Bloque?

To help you with this effort, we have the following write ins scheduled and invited to.

Battle Stats and Heroic Efforts

Battle Stats and Heroic Efforts

Hello NaNoLansing SuperWriters!

The Fight For World Domination!

We’ve just received intel that our ferocious word heroes did an amazing job last night at the write in. The Illiterasee’s Evil Villain, Max Perfect, tried to dodge our word bombs, but he wasn’t able to. We slashed his legs with hyperbole and struck his arms with metaphor and the sheer force of our words sent him home to tend to his wounds. We’ve almost won! His hit points are down so low, they are nearly critical! Let’s finish him off NaNoLansing!

The Power of Write Ins!

To help with that, we’re having our Super-Powered Write In tomorrow from 10 am to 4 pm at the Library of Michigan. More information can be found here.

If you are still wanting some writing time – Howell Carnegie District Library – 314 E. Grand River, Howell (map) will be having a Come Write In Sunday November 5th from Noon until 4 pm. They will have coffee, snacks, writing prompts and a quiet space to write.

We’ll also have another NaNoLansing Write In on Thursday Nov 9th at Old Chicago in Okemos (map) from 7 pm to 10 pm.

Become a Hero for NaNoWriMo!

Would you like to be a hero for National Novel Writing Month?

NaNoWriMo is funded mostly by us, the writers who enjoy this wonderful event. Tomorrow is Double Up Donation Day.
For $25, you will be able to receive $50 worth of goodies including a lovely enamel pin. Plus they will have drawings for great prizes every hour from 9 am EST (6 am PST) until 11 pm EST (8 pm PST).

Also, if you don’t have money to donate, we currently have 8 halos available in our Halo Relocation Program. Nominate yourself or someone else to receive one of those shiny golden halos.

We can do it, NaNoLansing! Let’s finish off the evil Max Perfect and the rest of the Illerasee’s evil villains with the power of our words!

April 2017 Camp NaNoWriMo: Cabin and Write-in News!

April 2017 Camp NaNoWriMo: Cabin and Write-in News!

Hello everyone and happy “Spring”!

This April’s Camp NaNoWriMo is right around the corner!

We have a cabin started and have some write-ins planned for this *informal* extravaganza!

If you are not familiar with Camp NaNoWriMo, it’s like a more laid back version of NaNoWriMo; you can write any sort of project you can think of and count your progress in word-count as usual, or in hours, pages, or lines! There is a lot of freedom to explore, and great opportunities for camaraderie and merriment along the way!

If you’d like to join in the festivities, head on over to! Create an account (you’ll use the same login info as with the regular NaNoWriMo site) or sign-in again if you’ve participated before.

Once you’re all signed-in, you’ll need to join a cabin! What are cabins, you ask?

“Cabins are Camp NaNoWriMo’s version of a writing group. Up to twenty writers can bunk together in a virtual cabin to create a personal writing community.”

Camp NaNoWriMo will automatically sort you into a random cabin. That’s great fun, but if you’d like to join our cabin, here’s what to do!

  1. Make sure that you’ve named your project. You’ll probably be prompted at the main page, but otherwise, under “My Camp NaNo” go to “Writing Projects” and create a new one!
  2. Once you have a project, you’ll need to change your cabin settings. To do this, go to “Cabins”–>”Cabin Settings”. There you can select that you’d like to be able to receive cabin invitations
  3. If you’ve already been sorted into a random cabin, you can leave that one and instead opt to receive invitations.
  4. Send a private message (“Conversations”–>”Camp Inbox”–>”Message a Camper” on the left sidebar) to YuOfOwari22 and let me know you’d like to join! I’ll then invite you to join our cabin.

Cabins cap out at 20 writers, but we can always have more than one if the first fills up so never fear – you’ll not have to write alone!

Speaking of not writing alone, we have a few write-ins planned for those who are so inclined:

April 2017 Camp NaNoWriMo Write-in Schedule:
Thursday, April 6: 7pm – 10pm
Thursday, April 13: 7:30pm – 10pm

All the write-ins planned so far will be held at the Grand Traverse Pie Co., 1403 E. Grand River , East Lansing, MI 48823

If you’d like to suggest other dates/times/places for write-ins, throw out your ideas on the Cabin Message Board (found under “Cabins”–>”My Cabin” once you’ve joined)!

Or if you’d like to communicate with all of NaNoLansing, and not just your cabin, please post over at our NaNoLansing Thread at NaNoWriMo.

Hope to see/”see” some of you soon!

Excitedly Yours,
Courtney aka YuOfOwari22

Dear Wrimos,

We’re well into November and the end may be coming a tad too quickly for some. Now is the time to channel your inner serpent and call on a few Slytherin traits. No matter which House you call home, you may need a dose of cleverness, a dash of resourcefulness, a pinch of determination, and “a certain disregard for the rules.”

The NaNo forums are here to help. Check out the Reaching 50,000! Section, where you’ll find Tips & Tricks, NaNo Dares, Scenes to Up Your Word Count, and more. You’ll also discover that none of this is actually against the rules, but don’t let that stop you.

Want a few quick tips from the forum, right here in your inbox? Give these a shot:
– Find and replace all the contractions with full words. Ex: “wasn’t” becomes “was not”.
– Give your main character a ridiculously long title and be sure it’s used every time. Ex: The Supremely Awesome Yet Gloriously Humble But Non Self Deprecating Exact Right Amount of Self Confidence Perfect Mary Sue.
– Accept a ridiculous dare and write a quick scene that is not part of the story. You may be surprised at how quickly you can write when you know it doesn’t matter. And you just may end up discovering something about your characters in the process.

For those of you who’ve hit the 50k or are well on the way, I salute you. Your timely resourcefulness and determination have served you well. Bravo! Keep cheering the rest of us on, if you will, and let’s do our noveling wizardry school proud.

Your Slytherin Head of House,

Hello fellow word wizards,

We are nearing the end of week 1 of our daring and courageous experience called NaNoWriMo.

Week 1 is the time of enthusiasm, passion, hope and excitement.  It is a valiant task to embark upon writing 50,000 words in a month, but one which many past word wizards like yourself have achieved and one which you can too!

How are you doing?  Are you feeling the excitement and bravely forging ahead?  Have you gone to your house common rooms and sought out the camaraderie that is gained with your fellow housemates?  Are you needing some encouragement?

Your fearless house professors (aka regional Municipal Liaisons – MLs) are here to help you achieve your goals and have many potions, spells, threads and words of wisdom to guide you through this process.  The more you immerse yourself in the experience, the better you will be able to achieve your goal, so be fearless.  Attend your write ins, use your spells, converse with fellow word wizardry students in the forums and forge ahead!  You are sure to feel a newfound sense of confidence and strength – and there might be some house points in it too.  😉

And speaking of house points….

Our current standings are:

Ravenclaw – 2442
Hufflepuff -2440
Slytherin – 2190
Gryffindor – 1814

So dear word wizards, we leave you with these words of Dumbledore,

Your house Gryffindor Professors aka USA::Michigan::Lansing MLs,

Professor Contemplative Cat (Annette) and
Professor YuOfOwari22 (Courtney)

PS.  If you haven’t yet been assigned to one of the Harry Potter houses and would like to fully immerse yourself into this magical month, please contact your regional professor aka Municipal Liaison.

This year we are joining with 3 other regions in a combined group experience.  The mechanics of NaNo remain the same, but there is some added fun with friendly competitions between houses.  You can read more about it here.

Fair Ravenclaw from glen,
Sweet Hufflepuff from valley broad,
Shrewd Slytherin from fen.
~ J.K. Rowling

Dear Wrimo Word Wizard,

We’re all of the sort to be sorted, and some may be unsorted yet, but your region’s ML has been sort of sorted, whether by truth or by circumstance. Each one represents a strong House, whether shrewd, sweet, bold, or fair. And each one will host a Common Room (Slytherin’s more of a lair). We’ll all share an intro and a quick hello, and hope you’re the sort who’ll drop in once you’re sorted to visit your own Common Room.

Beth/lachattefatale: RAVENCLAW- USA::Oregon::Albany-Corvallis
I’m Beth, and I’m a Ravenpuff. That is, when I take online Harry Potter quizzes, I usually score about 50% Ravenclaw, 48% Hufflepuff, 2%Gryffindor, and a lot of please-not-Slytherin-thank-you. I’ll be your head of Ravenclaw House this November, and you can join the best, most scholarly novelists in the Ravenclaw Common Room to meet other Ravenclaw writers from Oregon, Michigan, and Massachusetts. My co-ML and Head Prefect of Ravenclaw, Jen/Scrollwork will also be on hand to help demonstrate that even though we Ravenclaws are all lofty intellectuals (ha!), we know how to have a good time.

Annette/Contemplative Cat: GRYFFINDOR- USA::Michigan::Lansing
When I’ve taken sorting tests, I tend to fall closely between several houses.  Some days I’m more Gryffindor, others more Ravenclaw with the other two houses popping up occasionally.  But as the head of Gryffindor, I’ll bravely and loyally assist you, my fellow Gryffindorians, with all of my heart.  My Co-ML, Courtney (YuOfOwari22) will be assisting as our Head Prefect and although she has sorted in different houses, she will faithfully help all of our brave Gryffindor Word Wizards too.  Like Lori, this is my 10th year doing NaNo and my 5th as an ML.  (Pretty cool that we both started at the same time.)  Hopefully this will be my tenth win too.  (Don’t want to break that winning streak.) This 4 region endeavor is something we’ve never done before and it’s so very exciting.  I hope you have just as much fun with this as we’ve had planning it for you all!  So join our daring and courageous group as we forge ahead in this adventure called NaNoWriMo and don’t forget to come hang out in our Gryffindor tower.  The fire is blazing, the chairs are comfy and the view is wonderful!

Heather/kdskid007: HUFFLEPUFF- USA::Michigan::Flint
Hey all! I’m Heather, co-ML of Michigan’s Flint region. My fellow MLs, Meg and Wendi, and I all tend to get sorted into other houses (I have a mighty snake within my soul) but we all believe that writers are people of all sorts, and Hufflepuff aligns with that view, so we are thrilled to be heading Hufflepuff House. I’ve been at NaNo since 2008, and have been an ML of Flint since 2012. Wendi has been my co since 2013, and Meg was our unofficial ML in 2012, moved to Japan to teach for a couple years, and re-joined us on the ML team in 2015. Once you’re sorted, stop on by our Hufflepuff Common Room and chat with your fellow Badgers. (Even if you’re not in Hufflepuff, stop by our other threads and chat up our wrimos. They’re a friendly bunch.)

Lori/Flyleaf: SLYTHERIN- USA::Massachusetts::Cape Cod
I’ve never completely fit in any one group and Hogwarts is no exception. Pottermore sorted me into Ravenclaw and Slytherin, an extended quiz placed me in Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff. I call myself a RavenSlytherPuff, but I’m channeling my Slytherin side for the month of November. And I can’t wait. 10 years as a NaNoWriMo, 5 years as an ML, this is the one I’m looking forward to most. I’ll be working on fresh rewrites for my completely restructured steampunk/dreampunk Alice interactive adventure while living as a noveling wizard who’s getting in touch with her inner Bellatrix. Yep, We’re All Mad Here. Slytherins, come join the madness, uh… fun in our dungeon. The password rhymes with cake. (Feel free to bring cake. Or butterbeer. Love that stuff.)
“You could be great, you know, it’s all here in your head, and Slytherin will help you on the way to greatness, no doubt about that.” -Rowling

Yours sincerely,
Annette/Contemplative Cat, Courtney/YuOfOwari22: GRYFFINDOR- USA::Michigan::Lansing
Beth (Elizabeth)/ lachattefatale, Jen/Scrollwork: RAVENCLAW- USA::Oregon::Albany-Corvallis
Heather/kdskid007, Meg/BlackberrySpark, Wendi/cgirl1979: HUFFLEPUFF- USA::Michigan::Flint
Lori/Flyleaf: SLYTHERIN- USA::Massachusetts::Cape Cod
