2016 Post-NaNo Wrap Up and Survey!

2016 Post-NaNo Wrap Up and Survey!

Congratulations on finishing another wonderful NaNoWriMo Season!

This has been an eventful and magical year!

You might be like Annette and catching up on all of the things that you weren’t able to get to during NaNo. You might be like me and feeling paralyzed with indecision about which video game to start from the approximately one billion that released while you were typing away. You might be glad it’s all over, or missing it already. Whatever you are experiencing, you can be proud of yourself for all that you accomplished!

Survey
Please help us make 2017 even better for our region by taking the time to complete this survey. Your information really will help in planning next year. Thank you!

NaNoLansing Through The Year
If you don’t want to see the fun end, I’ve got good news for you! We will be having monthly write ins starting in January!
If you would be interested in continuing your writing activities with our lovely group, then we especially recommend that you answer our Post-NaNo survey (link above), as there is a section where you indicate your preferred days of the week, etc.
We will have information and discussions about our 2017 activities in this thread.

Communication Through the Year

Regional Email
We will send out regional emails to people with the information on the monthly write ins.  (If you haven’t signed up for these and want to stay in the loop, you can do it by going to: My NaNoWriMo -> Account Settings)

Regional Forum Posts
We will continue to post pertinent info on the regional forums, so check back every now and again for that!

NaNoLansing Year-round Newsletter
We will also have a periodic newsletter for sending out other information, such as writing workshops, interesting blog posts or articles, and other news or resources. If you filled out then Post-NaNo Survey, then hopefully you filled out that portion and we have your email address.
If you did not fill it out, or skipped that section, and you would like to receive the newsletter (we wont spam you, so don’t worry about that), then please either NaNomail either one of us (Contemplative Cat or YuOfOwari22), or send us an email to NaNoLansing@gmail.com with your NaNo username and the email that you’d like to receive the newsletter.

Facebook and Twitter
We’ll be posting last minute reminders or updates about changes to Facebook and Twitter.

2016 Stats:
301 members opened up a novel
79 never wrote a word
222 people wrote at least one word
5271592 words were written
Average number of words 23746
64 winners
7 people wrote over 75k words
29% of people who wrote at least 1 word won

We’d also like to note that as a group we donated a record $1,435! Way to go everyone! This includes all the various change and sundry that were fed to the TARDIS, so every penny really does count!
Great job all around everyone!

Project for Awesome
One last thing – Although the video-making portion is over, if you would like to help NaNoWriMo raise more funds, please consider participating in Project for Awesome.  NaNo has been able to receive donations from this for several years running.  For more information, please visit this thread. They will be updating the thread with voting information next week.

Have a wonderful Holiday Season everyone and we hope to see a lot of you in the New Year!

And now – Onto this week’s uplifting pep talk from Hufflepuff!

4 Region School of Wordcraft and Wizardry
House Heads: Annette/Contemplative Cat (Gryffindor), Beth/lachattefatale (Ravenclaw), Heather/kdskid007 (Hufflepuff), Lori/Flyleaf (Slytherin)

Dear Wrimo,

You made it through the month! Through this up and down filled adventure, you didn’t give up. You kept your head held high, your fingers agile, and your creativity flowing. You didn’t allow life to totally derail your writing efforts, though it sure did try. No matter where your final word count landed, you can hold that fact up as proof to the world that you. Are. A. Writer. You have more words written now than you did a month ago, and that’s not something just anyone can say.

We in Hufflepuff are loyal, and you have done an excellent job in remaining loyal to your novel. (Though admittedly, you may have strayed once or twice. I certainly did!) We are not just the House of leftovers, and neither are you and your novel. Every single word you have written makes you a writer, whether it was in plot outlines, character sketches, or the task of putting words on the page.

Don’t give up now, when you’re so close to the finish line. If you haven’t written in a couple of days thanks to all the holiday madness that’s been going on, ignore that. Sit down and crank out a few words, for like five minutes. Then take a break and write some more. You can do this! Strive for as close to 50k as you can, strive to break 50k. To quote the Sorting Hat from The Sorcerer’s Stone:

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

So toil away, wrimos! 50k might be a bit of a stretch, but don’t let that deter you. There are still a few days left in the month, and that goal isn’t entirely out of reach. Whether you’re native to Hufflepuff, have been transplanted for the month, or are in a different house entirely, follow Hufflepuff’s example and don’t give up. We have faith in you, and know that you can do this.

You’ve got this!

~Heather (kdskid007), Meg (BlackberrySpark), and Wendi (cgirl1979)

SAVE THE DATE – Kick Off Party:
We’ve been busy working on our schedule of activities and want to give you time to be sure you can attend.  With plenty of advance notice, we have scheduled our Kick Off Party so please save the date now.  We’ll have write ins and other events firmed up later and will give you those dates as we finalize them.

FACEBOOK CHANGES:
Facebook is making changes so you’ll see more posts from your friends and family in the news feed and fewer posts from the pages you follow. (In other words, NaNoLansing.) It’s great that posts from friends and family won’t be missed, but if you’d like to continue seeing NaNoLansing posts on a regular basis, just follow the instructions below.

1) Visit the NaNoLansing page by clicking the hyperlink on our name.
2) If you are on your mobile, tap on “following.” If you are on your desktop, tap on “liked.”
3) Select “see first.”

GOOGLE CALENDAR:

If you have synched your calendar with the NaNoLansing calendar, you may have to resync it as we’ve changed our email.  You can check to see if your synch is still active by checking for the Kick off event in October.  If it doesn’t show, you’ll need to resynch.

We’ve got an exciting year planned for you and will send more news as we get it.  If you have any questions or ideas, feel free to send us a NaNoMail.

Write-Ins and Other News

What? you may be saying. Why is Alaina talking about write-ins in January? Because tonight is the first of our monthly write-ins for the year at 7pm at The Avenue. We’ll be chatting about plans for the year, writing and more.

Keeping in Touch Beyond November

Since we know not every Wrimo wants to hear from us between January and September, this will probably be the last regional message for awhile. If you’d like to keep up with us the rest of the year, here are a few different ways to stay in the loop.

If you haven’t donated yet and plan to, today is a great day to do it with prize drawings and double donor goodies at the $25 level and more. Check out this page for more information.

Are you a broke Wrimo who would love to have a halo and get that badge on your dashboard for donating but just don’t have the cash to donate yourself? Check out this thread and this one.

2013 NaNoLansing Fundraising Video

Last year we had an awesome fundraising year and promised you all a video. It’s been live for a little over a week, but we know not everyone has found it yet,

You can watch it here.

Also, keep an eye on the forums for this year’s ‘ways your MLs are willing to embarrass themselves’ fundraising goals.

How to Track Your Word Count on a Partial/Revised Novel

We know our wrimos come at NaNo from a lot of different places in their writing. While most are starting something new, some are taking an old story and re-writing it or doing a new section, so the question has arisen of how do you record that word count?

It’s really simple. If you didn’t write it after 12:01 on November 1st, don’t record it in your word count and certainly don’t use it to verify.

Just like character sheets and plot outlines and all of those things that may have been created as prep in October don’t count, neither does anything else you might have written before that time. Create a new document, mark off the information from before so you don’t include it, whatever you have to do to differentiate between NaNo and the rest of the year.

If you have any questions, feel free to message either of your MLs.
