Are you a broke Wrimo who would love to have a halo and get that badge on your dashboard for donating but just don’t have the cash to donate yourself? Check out this thread and this one.

2013 NaNoLansing Fundraising Video

Last year we had an awesome fundraising year and promised you all a video. It’s been live for a little over a week, but we know not everyone has found it yet,

You can watch it here.

Also, keep an eye on the forums for this year’s ‘ways your MLs are willing to embarrass themselves’ fundraising goals.

How to Track Your Word Count on a Partial/Revised Novel

We know our wrimos come at NaNo from a lot of different places in their writing. While most are starting something new, some are taking an old story and re-writing it or doing a new section, so the question has arisen of how do you record that word count?

It’s really simple. If you didn’t write it after 12:01 on November 1st, don’t record it in your word count and certainly don’t use it to verify.

Just like character sheets and plot outlines and all of those things that may have been created as prep in October don’t count, neither does anything else you might have written before that time. Create a new document, mark off the information from before so you don’t include it, whatever you have to do to differentiate between NaNo and the rest of the year.

If you have any questions, feel free to message either of your MLs.

Talk and Signing with James Dashner

A fan of the Maze Runner series? James Dashner will be coming to Schuler’s Books’ Eastwood location on October 23rd at 6pm.

Here’s the information from their website:

We are so excited to welcome James Dashner, the author of the New York Times bestselling Maze Runner series. The Maze Runner is a dystopian thriller, soon to be released as a blockbuster film from 20th Century Fox, and now Dashner is celebrating the release of an all-new, edge-of-your seat adventure. The Eye of Minds is the first book in The Mortality Doctrine, a series set in a world of hyperadvanced technology, cyberterrorists, and gaming beyond your wildest dreams . . . and your worst nightmares.

This will be a ticketed event, with tickets available at our Eastwood Towne Center location when the store opens on October 8th, the release day of the new book. The first 100 tickets are available free with purchase of The Eye of Minds (one ticket per book purchased) and guarantee a seat at the event. Tickets 101 and greater are free with no purchase necessary. The signing will proceed after the author talk in approximate ticket number order. Tickets may be reserved in person or by calling the store at 517.316.7495 (phone purchase required for seated tickets).

2013 NaNoLansing Prep Events Are Coming!

2013 NaNoLansing Prep Events Are Coming!

30 days 23 hours 31 minutes until NaNoWrimo2013 begins. Are you ready?

If not, never fear. We have a great line-up of prep events to help get you in the spirit and get you writing ready for November 1st.

“Are You Ready to NaNoWriMo?” Workshop

October 5, 2pm
The Avenue

This event is courtesy of the Capital City Writer’s Association and our very own PoetryGirl73. She’s done a fabulous job putting together this intro/brush-up to NaNo and we encourage you to invite your friends to come out and learn more.

Finding Your Vision with Inspiration Boards

October 10, 7pm
The Avenue

Join us for a fun evening of cutting, pasting and bringing your vision to life with an inspiration board. Before you have a panic attack, no, we do not expect you to know what your main character (MC) prefers for breakfast or their goal in life or even who they are. The idea of an inspiration board is to find images, words, etc. that jive with you and the world you’re going for so that you can revisit them when you get stuck in the writing process. You can use this time to refine and visualize a world and characters that you’ve already decided or as a starting point for this year’s novel.

P.S. If you have an old magazines lying around please feel free to bring them along. The more options the better!

The Plot Thickens

October 17, 7pm
Grand Traverse Pie Company (E. Lansing)

Whether you prefer plot points or a detailed outline, this is an opportune time to decide what your story actually is about (instead of on Oct. 31st at 11:55 pm).

Breathing Life Into Your Characters

October 24, 7pm
The Avenue

As most NaNo vets can tell you, when you’ve lost the plot and the story is just not moving the way you want it’s the characters that help you find you way – even if its by misbehaving. We’ll take this time to discover and flesh out the characters that will move the plot along.

There you have it – our October line-up. We hope to see you there!

Welcome!

Welcome!

As Contemplative Cat and I were plotting, I mean, planning out events and information for our region this year the topic of a blog or website arose. Why? Some of the features that we wanted the site for will become apparent in time, but a few of the primary reasons were that we wanted a place where we could upload information, share supplemental NaNo things and do some functionality beyond the forums.

To be clear – this is not a replacement for NaNoWriMo.org and our regional forums.

Another reason for a site in addition to our Facebook group is, and I know this sounds crazy, there are actually members of our region that are not on Facebook. Take a deep breath. This has not yet caused the world to end.

Here are some of the things that will be appearing on here soon:

  • Write-In Dates & Locations
  • Blog Posts with tips and other information
  • Writing resources
  • Fun that shall not be named (just yet)
  • etc. etc. etc.

We’ll have information on how you can get involved with making our site awesome very, very soon.

OR

This could all just be a cover for a secret desire to be more like nanolanta. We’ll leave it up to you to decide.
