Battle Stats and Heroic Efforts

Battle Stats and Heroic Efforts

11-3-17

Hello NaNoLansing SuperWriters!

The Fight For World Domination!

We’ve just received intel that our ferocious word heroes did an amazing job last night at the write in. The Illiterasee’s Evil Villain, Max Perfect, tried to dodge our word bombs, but he wasn’t able to. We slashed his legs with hyperbole and struck his arms with metaphor and the sheer force of our words sent him home to tend to his wounds. We’ve almost won! His hit points are down so low, they are nearly critical! Let’s finish him off NaNoLansing!

The Power of Write Ins!

To help with that, we’re having our Super-Powered Write In tomorrow from 10 am to 4 pm at the Library of Michigan. More information can be found here.

If you are still wanting some writing time – Howell Carnegie District Library – 314 E. Grand River, Howell (map) will be having a Come Write In Sunday November 5th from Noon until 4 pm. They will have coffee, snacks, writing prompts and a quiet space to write.

We’ll also have another NaNoLansing Write In on Thursday Nov 9th at Old Chicago in Okemos (map) from 7 pm to 10 pm.

Become a Hero for NaNoWriMo!

Would you like to be a hero for National Novel Writing Month?

NaNoWriMo is funded mostly by us, the writers who enjoy this wonderful event. Tomorrow is Double Up Donation Day.
For $25, you will be able to receive $50 worth of goodies including a lovely enamel pin. Plus they will have drawings for great prizes every hour from 9 am EST (6 am PST) until 11 pm EST (8 pm PST).

Also, if you don’t have money to donate, we currently have 8 halos available in our Halo Relocation Program. Nominate yourself or someone else to receive one of those shiny golden halos.

We can do it, NaNoLansing! Let’s finish off the evil Max Perfect and the rest of the Illerasee’s evil villains with the power of our words!

April 2017 Camp NaNoWriMo: Cabin and Write-in News!

April 2017 Camp NaNoWriMo: Cabin and Write-in News!

Hello everyone and happy “Spring”!

This April’s Camp NaNoWriMo is right around the corner!

We have a cabin started and have some write-ins planned for this *informal* extravaganza!

If you are not familiar with Camp NaNoWriMo, it’s like a more laid back version of NaNoWriMo; you can write any sort of project you can think of and count your progress in word-count as usual, or in hours, pages, or lines! There is a lot of freedom to explore, and great opportunities for camaraderie and merriment along the way!

If you’d like to join in the festivities, head on over to campnanowrimo.org! Create an account (you’ll use the same login info as with the regular NaNoWriMo site) or sign-in again if you’ve participated before.

Once you’re all signed-in, you’ll need to join a cabin! What are cabins, you ask?

“Cabins are Camp NaNoWriMo’s version of a writing group. Up to twenty writers can bunk together in a virtual cabin to create a personal writing community.”

Camp NaNoWriMo will automatically sort you into a random cabin. That’s great fun, but if you’d like to join our cabin, here’s what to do!

  1. Make sure that you’ve named your project. You’ll probably be prompted at the main page, but otherwise, under “My Camp NaNo” go to “Writing Projects” and create a new one!
  2. Once you have a project, you’ll need to change your cabin settings. To do this, go to “Cabins”–>”Cabin Settings”. There you can select that you’d like to be able to receive cabin invitations
  3. If you’ve already been sorted into a random cabin, you can leave that one and instead opt to receive invitations.
  4. Send a private message (“Conversations”–>”Camp Inbox”–>”Message a Camper” on the left sidebar) to YuOfOwari22 and let me know you’d like to join! I’ll then invite you to join our cabin.

Cabins cap out at 20 writers, but we can always have more than one if the first fills up so never fear – you’ll not have to write alone!

Speaking of not writing alone, we have a few write-ins planned for those who are so inclined:

April 2017 Camp NaNoWriMo Write-in Schedule:
Thursday, April 6: 7pm – 10pm
Thursday, April 13: 7:30pm – 10pm

All the write-ins planned so far will be held at the Grand Traverse Pie Co., 1403 E. Grand River , East Lansing, MI 48823

If you’d like to suggest other dates/times/places for write-ins, throw out your ideas on the Cabin Message Board (found under “Cabins”–>”My Cabin” once you’ve joined)!

Or if you’d like to communicate with all of NaNoLansing, and not just your cabin, please post over at our NaNoLansing Thread at NaNoWriMo.

Hope to see/”see” some of you soon!

Excitedly Yours,
Courtney aka YuOfOwari22

2016 Post-NaNo Wrap Up and Survey!

2016 Post-NaNo Wrap Up and Survey!

Congratulations on finishing another wonderful NaNoWriMo Season!

This has been an eventful and magical year!

You might be like Annette and catching up on all of the things that you weren’t able to get to during NaNo. You might be like me and feeling paralyzed with indecision about which video game to start from the approximately one billion that released while you were typing away. You might be glad it’s all over, or missing it already. Whatever you are experiencing, you can be proud of yourself for all that you accomplished!

Survey
Please help us make 2017 even better for our region by taking the time to complete this survey. Your information really will help in planning next year. Thank you!

NaNoLansing Through The Year
If you don’t want to see the fun end, I’ve got good news for you! We will be having monthly write ins starting in January!
If you would be interested in continuing your writing activities with our lovely group, then we especially recommend that you answer our Post-NaNo survey (link above), as there is a section where you indicate your preferred days of the week, etc.
We will have information and discussions about our 2017 activities in this thread.

Communication Through the Year

Regional Email
We will send out regional emails to people with the information on the monthly write ins.  (If you haven’t signed up for these and want to stay in the loop, you can do it by going to: My NaNoWriMo -> Account Settings)

Regional Forum Posts
We will continue to post pertinent info on the regional forums, so check back every now and again for that!

NaNoLansing Year-round Newsletter
We will also have a periodic newsletter for sending out other information, such as writing workshops, interesting blog posts or articles, and other news or resources. If you filled out then Post-NaNo Survey, then hopefully you filled out that portion and we have your email address.
If you did not fill it out, or skipped that section, and you would like to receive the newsletter (we wont spam you, so don’t worry about that), then please either NaNomail either one of us (Contemplative Cat or YuOfOwari22), or send us an email to NaNoLansing@gmail.com with your NaNo username and the email that you’d like to receive the newsletter.

Facebook and Twitter
We’ll be posting last minute reminders or updates about changes to Facebook and Twitter.

79 never wrote a word
222 people wrote at least one word
5271592 words were written
Average number of words 23746
64 winners
7 people wrote over 75k words
29% of people who wrote at least 1 word won

We’d also like to note that as a group we donated a record $1,435! Way to go everyone! This includes all the various change and sundry that were fed to the TARDIS, so every penny really does count!
Great job all around everyone!

Project for Awesome
One last thing – Although the video-making portion is over, if you would like to help NaNoWriMo raise more funds, please consider participating in Project for Awesome.  NaNo has been able to receive donations from this for several years running.  For more information, please visit this thread. Here are the current standings:

And now – Onto this week’s uplifting pep talk from Hufflepuff!

4 Region School of Wordcraft and Wizardry
House Heads: Annette/Contemplative Cat (Gryffindor), Beth/lachattefatale (Ravenclaw), Heather/kdskid007 (Hufflepuff), Lori/Flyleaf (Slytherin)

Dear Wrimo,

You made it through the month! Through this up and down filled adventure, you didn’t give up. You kept your head held high, your fingers agile, and your creativity flowing. You didn’t allow life to totally derail your writing efforts, though it sure did try. No matter where your final word count landed, you can hold that fact up as proof to the world that you. Are. A. Writer. You have more words written now than you did a month ago, and that’s not something just anyone can say.

We in Hufflepuff are loyal, and you have done an excellent job in remaining loyal to your novel. (Though admittedly, you may have strayed once or twice. I certainly did!) We are not just the House of leftovers, and neither are you and your novel. Every single word you have written makes you a writer, whether it was in plot outlines, character sketches, or the task of putting words on the page.

Don’t give up now, when you’re so close to the finish line. If you haven’t written in a couple of days thanks to all the holiday madness that’s been going on, ignore that. Sit down and crank out a few words, for like five minutes. Then take a break and write some more. You can do this! Strive for as close to 50k as you can, strive to break 50k. To quote the Sorting Hat from The Sorcerer’s Stone:

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;

So toil away, wrimos! 50k might be a bit of a stretch, but don’t let that deter you. There are still a few days left in the month, and that goal isn’t entirely out of reach. Whether you’re native to Hufflepuff, have been transplanted for the month, or are in a different house entirely, follow Hufflepuff’s example and don’t give up. We have faith in you, and know that you can do this.

You’ve got this!

And now – Onto the brilliantly cunning and creative pep talk from Slytherin!

4 Region School of Wordcraft and Wizardry
House Heads: Annette/Contemplative Cat (Gryffindor), Beth/lachattefatale (Ravenclaw), Heather/kdskid007 (Hufflepuff), Lori/Flyleaf (Slytherin)

Dear Wrimos,

We’re well into November and the end may be coming a tad too quickly for some. Now is the time to channel your inner serpent and call on a few Slytherin traits. No matter which House you call home, you may need a dose of cleverness, a dash of resourcefulness, a pinch of determination, and “a certain disregard for the rules.”

The NaNo forums are here to help. Check out the Reaching 50,000! Section, where you’ll find Tips & Tricks, NaNo Dares, Scenes to Up Your Word Count, and more. You’ll also discover that none of this is actually against the rules, but don’t let that stop you.

Want a few quick tips from the forum, right here in your inbox? Give these a shot:
– Find and replace all the contractions with full words. Ex: “wasn’t” becomes “was not”.
– Give your main character a ridiculously long title and be sure it’s used every time. Ex: The Supremely Awesome Yet Gloriously Humble But Non Self Deprecating Exact Right Amount of Self Confidence Perfect Mary Sue.
– Accept a ridiculous dare and write a quick scene that is not part of the story. You may be surprised at how quickly you can write when you know it doesn’t matter. And you just may end up discovering something about your characters in the process.

For those of you who’ve hit the 50k or are well on the way, I salute you. Your timely resourcefulness and determination have served you well. Bravo! Keep cheering the rest of us on, if you will, and let’s do our noveling wizardry school proud.

Your Slytherin Head of House,

Lori/Flyleaf
